Lake Chiemsee is home to Herreninsel with the New Palace of Herrenchiemsee and the idyllic Fraueninsel with Frauenwörth Abbey. Both are among the highlights of the Alpine foothills and can be visited on a tour from Munich.
A Munich guide will accompany you on the bus to Prien am Chiemsee. During the journey, you will learn about the history and culture of the region and, of course, about King König Ludwig II. of Bavaria. The monarch was a great admirer of the French Sun King Louis XIV and had the ‘New Palace’ Herrenchiemsee built in the style of Versailles. However, it remained unfinished.
You will take an excursion steamer to Herreninsel. From there, you can walk or take a horse-drawn carriage to the palace, passing through the baroque gardens with their water features. A local guide will lead you through the magnificent rooms, of which the Great Mirror Gallery and the State Bedroom are particularly impressive.
Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to explore the King Ludwig II Museum in the south wing of the palace on your own.
Another optional component is a visit to the nearby Augustinian monastery, also known as the ‘Old Castle’ of Herrenchiemsee. Here, a museum tells the story of the origins of the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany, for which the foundation stone was laid on Herreninsel in 1948.
If you would like to spend more time on Lake Chiemsee, you can also plan a visit to the idyllic Fraueninsel with your guide in advance. The island enchants with flower gardens, small fishing businesses and an artists' colony with workshops and potteries. Last but not least, the 8th-century Benedictine convent of Frauenwörth is waiting to be discovered by you!
Incidentally, the monastery also included the tiny ‘Krautinsel’ (herb island), formerly the nuns' vegetable and herb garden, which can only be seen from the boat.
